Graduate Management Selection Programme review
While working as the Northwest Regional Centre Manager for Workable, I was approached by a former Human Resources Business Partner at HSBC, based in Canary Wharf, London, to support a review of their UK Graduate Management Selection Programme. John Arnot had learned about my work in Manchester through one of his colleagues, and through initiatives I had recently led, including an undergraduate work placement I had setup with one of his contacts who had previously attended one of my “Employment Action Days” at Old Trafford Football Club. These events brought employers and prospective disabled student graduates together to learn from each other and explore employment opportunities.
The aim of the Graduate Management Selection and Assessment Programme review I conducted for HSBC was to ensure that the selection process was accessible to disabled undergraduates and graduate students, while also being equitable and fair to all applicants.
Following this work, the Chief Executive of SKILL – the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities – invited me to write an article for their quarterly SKILL Journal. In the article, I shared key findings from my review of HSBC’s programme and offered practical guidance for disabled students and graduates navigating assessment centres. I also outlined specific steps and adjustments that HSBC’s senior management team, and other companies, could implement to make their selection processes more inclusive and accessible.
